Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The government has advised residents of The Gambia’s border communities to stay away from areas affected by ongoing hostilities in the Casamance region of southern Senegal, warning that the situation poses potential security and humanitarian risks.
In a security alert issued on 21 March 2026, the National Early Warning and Response Mechanism Coordinating Center (NCCRM) said recent confrontations between the Senegalese Armed Forces and elements of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC) have heightened tensions along the border with The Gambia.
According to the center, the clashes have already triggered population displacement from several communities in the Casamance region, including Jakine, Kamosorr, Batendeng, Ajapineh, Kayenga, and Giffanga.
Preliminary information indicates that displaced persons have sought refuge in nearby host communities such as Tampoto, Kabocorr, and Sibanor, though the total number of affected people has not yet been determined.
Public Advised to Avoid Affected Areas
Amid the evolving situation, the NCCRM urged members of the public, especially those living in or planning to travel to border areas, to avoid unnecessary movement to locations affected by the conflict.
“Members of the public, particularly those residing in or intending to travel to border communities, are strongly advised to refrain from nonessential movement to affected areas until the situation stabilizes,” the center said.
Residents were also urged to remain vigilant, comply with instructions from security services, and promptly report any suspicious activity or incidents to the relevant authorities.
Call for Calm and Community Support
The NCCRM noted that the displacement could create humanitarian and protection concerns, stressing the need for vigilance as the situation continues to unfold.
Host communities receiving displaced persons were encouraged to show solidarity and support while remaining mindful of local security considerations.
Community leaders and local authorities were also urged to promote calm, discourage the spread of unverified information, and coordinate with response agencies where necessary.
The center said it is closely monitoring developments in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and will provide further updates as the situation evolves.
The NCCRM operates under the Office of the Vice President and is responsible for monitoring emerging security and humanitarian risks across the country.
