National Assembly Raises Alarm Over Growing Use of Foreign Currencies in Local Transactions

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The National Assembly has expressed concern over the increasing use of foreign currencies in domestic transactions, with lawmakers calling for stronger measures to protect the Gambian Dalasi and uphold its status as the country’s legal tender.

The issue was brought before Parliament as a matter of the Day by the Member for New Yundum and Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Abdoulie Ceesay, who warned that the practice of demanding payments in foreign currencies such as the US dollar, euro, and CFA franc for local transactions undermines the Dalasi and threatens national economic stability.

Hon. Ceesay argued that the use of foreign currencies in domestic transactions, except where legally permitted, weakens public confidence in the national currency, affects financial stability, and erodes the sovereignty associated with the Dalasi.

The Dalasi must remain the heartbeat of our nation,” he told lawmakers, while urging members of the public to report instances where foreign currencies are demanded for local payments.

Contributing to the debate, several lawmakers agreed that safeguarding the Dalasi requires sound economic policies, stronger financial regulation, and effective management of the national economy.

The Member for Central Badibou, Hon. Sulayman Saho, attributed the weakening of the Dalasi to a range of factors, including inflationary pressures, challenges in foreign exchange management, and the circulation of counterfeit currency.

The Member for Foni Bintang, Hon. Bakary Badjie, also voiced concern over the growing use of foreign currencies in rent payments, business transactions, and other domestic dealings, describing the trend as a threat to the country’s monetary system.

Other lawmakers, including Hon. Alhaji Babou Ceesay of Sabach Sanjal, Hon. Alhagie Mbowe of Upper Saloum, Hon. Kebba Lang Fofana, a nominated member, and Hon. Suwaibou Touray of Wuli East called for a collective national effort to strengthen the Dalasi.

Members stressed that boosting domestic production, supporting agriculture, reducing dependence on imports, and increasing foreign exchange earnings are critical to maintaining the stability and value of the national currency.

The debate took place on the final day of the Second Ordinary Session of the 2026 Legislative Year before the National Assembly adjourned sine die following a motion moved by the Majority Leader and Member for Kantora, Hon. Billaye G. Tunkara. The Assembly is expected to reconvene in September.
