Gambiaj.com – (WASHINGTON, United States) – Tim Cook will step down as Chief Executive Officer of Apple in early September, bringing to a close a nearly 15-year tenure that oversaw unprecedented growth for the tech giant, the company announced on Monday.
He will be succeeded by John Ternus, Apple’s current head of hardware engineering, who has been widely viewed as a leading candidate for the role. Cook, 65, will remain with the California-based company as Executive Chairman of the Board, ensuring continuity in leadership.
The transition, set for September 1, comes sooner than many industry observers had anticipated, despite Ternus’s longstanding positioning as a likely successor.
Cook assumed leadership in 2011, taking over from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who resigned due to ill health and died weeks later.
While often compared to Jobs’ visionary leadership style, Cook carved out his own legacy, focusing on operational efficiency and scaling Apple’s global footprint.
Under his leadership, Apple’s market value surged dramatically, surpassing $4 trillion and making it one of the most valuable companies in the world.
Between 2011 and 2025, the company’s revenue grew by approximately 260 percent, while its market capitalization increased more than thirteenfold, driven largely by the sustained success of the iPhone and expansion into services.
The leadership shift mirrors similar transitions in the tech industry, including those of Jeff Bezos at Amazon and Reed Hastings at Netflix, where outgoing CEOs moved into executive chairman roles following long tenures.
Ternus, who joined Apple in 2001, has played a central role in overseeing hardware engineering, including efforts that helped revive interest in Apple’s Mac computers. His appointment signals continuity in Apple’s core product strategy, even as the company faces mounting pressure to strengthen its position in emerging technologies.
Apple has also reshuffled its leadership team, naming Johny Srouji, who led the development of the company’s custom chips and sensors, as its new head of hardware.
Despite its dominance in consumer electronics, Apple has been criticized for lagging behind competitors in generative artificial intelligence, a sector that gained global momentum following the launch of tools like ChatGPT in late 2022.
The company is still working to fully integrate advanced AI capabilities into its flagship products, including the iPhone, where updates to its voice assistant Siri are still anticipated.
As Ternus prepares to take the helm, analysts say one of his immediate challenges will be accelerating Apple’s push into artificial intelligence while sustaining the company’s long-standing hardware innovation edge.
