Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Parliament of Lesotho is studying The Gambia’s approach to development financing and parliamentary oversight, with a high-level delegation visiting Banjul to learn from the country’s experience in managing development funds and strengthening accountability in the use of public resources.
The delegation, led by the Speaker of the Parliament of Lesotho, Honourable Tlohang Sekhamane, is on a study tour focused on The Gambia’s implementation of the Programme for Accelerated Community Development (PACD) and Parliament’s role in overseeing the use of public funds.
Strengthening Parliamentary Cooperation
According to the National Assembly, the delegation paid a courtesy call on Speaker Fabakary Tombong Jatta, who welcomed the visit and described it as an opportunity to deepen parliamentary cooperation and share best practices between the two legislatures.
Speaker Sekhamane said the visit was intended to enable Lesotho to learn from The Gambia’s experience in implementing government development financing through the PACD.
The delegation subsequently held a technical session with members of the Finance and Public Accounts Committee (FPAC), chaired by Brikama North lawmaker and Minority Leader Alhagie S. Darbo.
Focus on Public Financial Management
Discussions centered on Parliament’s constitutional responsibilities in scrutinizing and approving the national budget, overseeing government expenditure, and promoting sound public financial management.
The two sides also discussed mechanisms for ensuring accountability, transparency, and value for money in the use of public resources.
The Chairperson of Lesotho’s Parliamentary Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, Honourable Itumeleng Rantsho, shared his country’s parliamentary committee structures and approaches to monitoring the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The National Assembly said both delegations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening parliamentary collaboration through continued exchanges on oversight, public financial management, and development financing.
