Gambiaj.com – (FAJARA, The Gambia) – A teacher and recent university graduate, Yunusa Mbye, has died following an alleged violent altercation in Fajara, prompting a police investigation and an overwhelming wave of grief across The Gambia’s academic community.
According to a statement issued by the Gambia Police Force on Monday, officers of the Kairaba Police Station are investigating an alleged murder incident that occurred on June 15, 2026, resulting in the death of Mr. Mbye, a native of Bansang.
Police identified the suspect as Mamadou Bah, a 33-year-old Guinean national residing in Fajara. He is currently in police custody and assisting investigators with their inquiries.
The police’s preliminary findings indicate that the incident stemmed from an altercation between the deceased and the suspect. During the confrontation, Mr. Mbye reportedly sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Crime scene investigators and officers from the Criminal Investigation Department visited the scene and recovered items believed to be relevant to the investigation.
“The investigations into the matter are ongoing, and the police will continue to provide updates as the case progresses,” the statement said.
The death of Mr. Mbye has sparked widespread shock and sadness, particularly among students, graduates, and staff of the University of The Gambia.
Mbye was widely known for his leadership role as Vice President of the 22nd Executive Council of the University of The Gambia Students’ Union (UTGSU), where he actively championed student interests and participated in initiatives aimed at improving student welfare and engagement.
Friends and former colleagues described him as a promising young educator whose future appeared bright after recently completing his university studies and graduating.
News of his death quickly spread across social media, where tributes poured in from students, alumni, and members of the public. Many remembered him as a dedicated leader, mentor, and advocate who left a lasting impact on the university community.
As investigations continue, many have called for justice and urged the authorities to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident that claimed the life of the young teacher.
