Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – A fourth Senegalese soldier has died from injuries sustained in an explosion earlier this week in the north of Sindian, bringing the death toll from the incident to four.
The soldier, Adjutant Ibrahima Ndour, passed away after being wounded in the blast that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, March 17, 2026, in Military Zone No. 5 near the border with The Gambia. His death was confirmed by military sources, who said he had been receiving treatment following the incident.
Ndour, a member of the 1998/1 contingent, has been described by fellow soldiers as a dedicated serviceman, remembered for his commitment to duty and his personal humility. Colleagues also paid tribute to him as a devout and principled individual who served his nation with distinction.
The explosion initially claimed the lives of three soldiers and left others wounded. According to Senegal’s Directorate of Information and Public Relations of the Armed Forces (DIRPA), the incident occurred during an operation to destroy Mouvement des Forces Démocratiques de Casamance (MFDC) rebels’ fields of cannabis in the Sindian area.
Three injured soldiers were evacuated shortly after the blast and received medical care. The circumstances surrounding the explosion have been described as accidental.
The military operation, ongoing for more than a week, is part of broader efforts by Senegalese forces to dismantle illicit cannabis cultivation and counter the activities of armed groups operating in the region.
Despite the loss, the army has reaffirmed its commitment to continue operations aimed at securing local populations and protecting property in the volatile border zone.
