Gambiaj.com – (GUNJUR, The Gambia) – President Adama Barrow on Friday inaugurated a newly constructed mosque in Gunjur, Kombo South, bringing together thousands of worshippers, religious leaders, government officials, and community members for Jumu’ah prayers and the opening of the new religious complex.
The inauguration marked a significant occasion for Gunjur, a historic coastal town known for its strong Islamic heritage and its contribution to religious scholarship in The Gambia.
In a statement following the ceremony, President Barrow said he was honored to officially inaugurate the new mosque, describing the occasion as a moment of “great humility and grace.”
Gunjur’s Islamic Heritage
President Barrow highlighted Gunjur’s important place in The Gambia’s Islamic history, noting that the town is home to several prominent religious scholars, including two who went on to serve as chairmen of the Supreme Islamic Council.
He said the large turnout of religious and community leaders at Friday prayers demonstrated the town’s ability to bring people together.
“The massive presence of imams, traditional Majlis leaders, Sherifollu, Alkalolu, and other community figures at today’s prayers is a testament to the unifying power of Gunjur,” President Barrow said.
He described mosques as an important part of the country’s social infrastructure, expressing confidence that the new facility would serve a broader purpose beyond religious worship.
“I am convinced that this new religious complex will continue to serve as a center for peace, social justice, dialogue, and character development,” he said.
Praise for Community Effort
President Barrow also thanked the contractor responsible for the project, commending the quality of the construction, materials, and workmanship, as well as the timely completion of the mosque.
He expressed particular appreciation to the women, youths, and other well-wishers in Gunjur and beyond for the unity and support they demonstrated throughout the project.
The President said the collective effort behind the mosque reflected the importance of community participation in projects intended to benefit future generations.
Barrow Highlights Government Projects
The inauguration also provided President Barrow with an opportunity to highlight his government’s ongoing infrastructure and development program.
He said the government would continue to invest in high-impact infrastructure across the country, pointing to progress in road construction and other development projects.
According to the President, government attention is also being directed towards key sectors including health, agriculture, water and electricity, which he described as essential basic services.
President Barrow concluded his remarks by praying for peace during the election year as The Gambia prepares for the December 5, 2026 presidential election.
