President Barrow Names Ousman Gomez Chief of Defense Staff in Military Reshuffle

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – President Adama Barrow has appointed a new Chief of Defense Staff and made a series of changes to the senior leadership of The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), according to a press dispatch issued by the Office of the Government Spokesperson and Presidential Adviser on Diaspora Affairs.

The appointments, which take immediate effect, were made by the President in accordance with powers vested in him under Section 190(1A) of the 1997 Constitution.

Under the new military command structure, Major General Ousman Gomez, who had been serving as Acting Chief of Defence Staff, has been confirmed as the new Chief of Defence Staff of The Gambia Armed Forces.

Brigadier General Sait Njie, formerly Commander of The Gambia National Army, has been appointed Deputy Chief of Defense Staff.

The reshuffle also sees Brigadier General Yaya Drammeh move from his position as Commander of the Republican National Guards to become the new Commander of The Gambia National Army.

Meanwhile, Colonel Alhagie Sanneh, who was serving as Defence Attaché at The Gambia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, has been recalled and appointed Commander of the Republican National Guards.

The appointments represent a significant reorganization of the senior command of the armed forces, affecting key leadership positions within the military hierarchy. The government said the changes take effect immediately.
