IMF Praises The Gambia’s Economic Achievements

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Hon. Minister of Finance, Seedy K.M. Keita, on Tuesday led a courtesy call on His Excellency, the President, following the arrival of Bo Li, Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, who is on a two-day visit to The Gambia.

The meeting provided an opportunity to brief the President on the ongoing engagement between The Gambia and the IMF, including the steady progress in implementing the IMF-supported program.

Discussions also highlighted the strong partnership between The Gambia and the IMF, as well as the recently approved Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), which will support the country’s climate finance agenda.

The Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mr. Bo Li, commended the country’s progress over the past seven years, citing satisfactory implementation of IMF programs. He made this statement during a courtesy visit to President Adama Barrow at the State House in Banjul.

Reacting to Mr. Bo Li’s comments, President Barrow reiterated his government’s commitment to fiscal discipline and digitalization efforts to curb corruption and boost domestic revenue collection. He urged the IMF to continue supporting the country’s development programs and emphasized that the ultimate responsibility for The Gambia’s development lies with its citizens.

President Barrow also highlighted his government’s social contract with the people, respect for institutional frameworks, and the crucial role of the private sector in driving economic growth. He emphasized the need for national security and economic stability to support social programs and called for peace and stability in the country.

Mr. Li’s visit aims to strengthen dialogue with authorities, who have shown a strong commitment to macroeconomic stability and structural reforms.

The Gambia is working towards completing its second IMF program by year-end and is committed to starting a new one.
