Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The top leadership of The Gambia Police Force is currently holding a major security meeting focused on preparing officers for election-related duties, like the ongoing voter registration, as the country gradually moves deeper into the pre-campaign period.
The meeting, taking place at the Police Conference Hall, has brought together Regional Commissioners of Police and Chiefs of operations from across the country.
It is chaired by Inspector General of Police Seedy Mukhtar Touray and attended by Deputy Inspector General Alhagie Demba Sowe, Assistant Inspectors General Ebrima Bah, Pateh Jallow, Amie Nyassi, and Adeline Basangeh, together with senior regional commanders.
As voter registration and political activities continue to gather momentum, the police leadership appears to be taking early steps to ensure officers across the country are prepared to handle possible tensions, maintain public order, and respond quickly to security concerns.
Recently, some folks have been arrested on several geographical locations of the country after they went harassing people queing to register in the ongoing supplementary process.
But acoording to the police, the ongoing top command discussions are focused on improving coordination among officers, strengthening security cooperation, and preparing the force for responsibilities linked to the electoral process.

By bringing together commanders responsible for field operations nationwide, the police leadership is seeking to ensure uniform interpretation and enforcement of election-related laws, rapid response coordination, and tighter command structures capable of preventing political violence, public disorder, or security lapses during politically sensitive periods.
Therefore, the decisions taken there could directly affect how peaceful and secure the electoral process will be in the coming months.
The gathering also sends a strong signal that the police command now sees the country as entering a serious political period that requires tighter security planning and closer monitoring.
Although official campaigning has not fully started, political activities are already increasing in many parts of the country, making election security a growing concern.
Hence, the Police Prosecution and Legal Affairs Team, led by Commissioner Abdoulie Sanneh, is also briefing officers on their responsibilities under the Election Act.
The team is reminding officers about the importance of following electoral laws during voter registration exercises and other election-related activities.
This legal guidance is seen as important in helping officers avoid actions that could create public mistrust or raise questions about fairness during the electoral process.
The Gambia Police Force said the meeting forms part of its continued efforts to promote professionalism, public safety, and peaceful elections across the country.
