Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – Police have arrested a 35-year-old Nigerian national in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend, whose body was discovered in a bush between Kitty and Siffoe villages in the West Coast Region last week.
The suspect, identified as Audu Williams, was taken into custody following investigations into the death of Esther Tango, a 41-year-old Nigerian national. Her body was found on July 7, 2026, after she was initially unidentified and known only by the name “Jessica.”
According to a police statement issued on Monday, detectives from the Suba Ward Criminal Investigation Department (CID), with support from the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Team, worked to establish the victim’s identity. Investigators later recovered her Nigerian passport during a search of her residence in Brikama, confirming her identity as Esther Tango.
Police said the investigation combined witness statements, forensic examination of the crime scene and analysis of telecommunications records, which led detectives to identify Williams as the prime suspect. He was subsequently invited for questioning.
During the investigation, Williams allegedly confessed to the crime, police said.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect allegedly lured the victim to Kitty on the night of July 6, where the fatal incident occurred before her body was abandoned in the nearby bush.
Police said Williams has been cautioned and remains in custody while investigations continue. He is expected to be formally charged and prosecuted under the laws of The Gambia once the investigation is completed.
The Gambia Police Force praised the investigators involved in the case, describing their work as professional and diligent, and credited their efforts for the swift breakthrough in the investigation.
The case remains under investigation.
