Gambiaj.com – (CONAKRY, Guinea) – President Adama Barrow has returned from an official visit to Guinea, where energy cooperation dominated talks aimed at deepening ties between the two neighbors.
Barrow travelled to Conakry at the invitation of President Mamadi Doumbouya, with discussions covering a wide range of areas, including agriculture, trade, defence and security, tourism, fisheries, higher education, science and technology, youth and sports, and culture.
But it was energy that stood out. The inclusion of Petroleum and Energy Minister Nani Juwara and NAWEC Managing Director Galo Saidy in the Gambian delegation signalled how central the sector was to the visit, coming at a time when unreliable electricity supply remains one of The Gambia’s most pressing development challenges.
The joint communiqué issued after the talks did not spell out specific projects, financing, or timelines, but it opened the door for both countries to explore practical cooperation on electricity and power generation, an area regional partners increasingly see as a shared priority given persistent supply gaps across the sub-region.
Barrow and Doumbouya also held one-on-one talks on bilateral relations, regional cooperation, and common development priorities before signing the Joint Communiqué, witnessed by both leaders, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening ties between the two countries.
Barrow thanked Doumbouya and the people of Guinea for their hospitality, describing the visit as an important step in consolidating the long-standing relationship between the two nations.
For The Gambia, the visit reflects a broader push for stronger regional partnerships to tackle infrastructure gaps. Whether it delivers real results, however, will depend on what comes next: officials on both sides will now need to turn the political goodwill into concrete energy projects that can ease Gambia’s power woes and support economic growth.
