Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia Police Force has confirmed that the vessel carrying a container reported to contain contaminated buffalo meat departed the Port of Banjul on Friday morning without discharging the container.
According to a police update issued on October 9, the vessel left the port at approximately 9:45 a.m., with the container still on board.
The development brings to a close concerns that emerged earlier this week after authorities were alerted to the presence of the container aboard the vessel, which arrived at the Port of Banjul on Thursday.
The police had earlier confirmed that the container was not destined for The Gambia and would not be discharged at the port.
Authorities subsequently shared information about the shipment with neighboring countries through INTERPOL channels as part of efforts to ensure that relevant authorities remained informed.
The latest police statement did not provide details about the vessel’s next destination or the nature and quantity of the reported contaminated meat.
The Gambia Police Force thanked sister security services and other relevant agencies for their cooperation in monitoring the container while the vessel was in port.
The police response followed heightened public concern over the reported shipment, with authorities stressing that the container never entered the local market or was discharged in Banjul.
