Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, THE GAMBIA) – The Gambia’s Ministry of Justice has rejected allegations by UNITE that the government altered the 2026 Local Government Commission of Inquiry report after its submission, insisting that the document was published in its original form without any government interference.
In a press release issued on November 4, the Attorney General’s Chambers described the allegation as false and misleading, accusing UNITE of deliberately seeking to discredit the government over its White Paper on the commission’s recommendations.
The ministry said the government neither amended, edited, nor altered any part of the report, maintaining that it was published exactly as submitted by the commission.
The response followed a press conference held by UNITE on November 3, during which the political movement raised concerns about the integrity of the report and its publication.
Ministry Says Reports Were Gazetted
Addressing questions about the publication process, the ministry also dismissed claims that the report had not been gazetted, saying both the commission’s report and the government’s White Paper were officially gazetted on October 29, 2026.
According to the statement, the documents were gazetted by the Gambia Printing and Publishing Corporation under Government Notice No. 211/2026.
The ministry said printed copies were made available to the public the following day, October 30.
It added that electronic versions were subsequently uploaded to the websites of the Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, and the Ministry of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs to facilitate wider public access.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, due process, and the rule of law, as questions surrounding the commission’s findings and the government’s response continue to attract public attention.
