Gambiaj.com – (CAIRO, Egypt) – Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, the eldest son of Ghana’s founding President Kwame Nkrumah, has died in Cairo, Egypt, following a prolonged illness, his family has announced.
Nkrumah, a journalist, writer, Pan-Africanist and former editor of Al Ahram Weekly, died peacefully while receiving care at a rehabilitation centre after suffering a stroke, according to a statement issued by the Nkrumah family.
Born in Accra in 1958 to Kwame Nkrumah and his Egyptian wife, Fathia Nkrumah, Gamal was named after Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, reflecting the close political relationship between the two leaders and their shared commitment to anti-colonialism and African solidarity.
A Life Between Ghana And Egypt
Following the 1966 military coup that overthrew his father, Gamal moved to Cairo with his mother and siblings, Samia and Sekou, with assistance from Nasser. The family settled in Egypt, where the children attended Al-Nasr College in Maadi.
He later studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, where he earned a doctorate in political science. He also spent several years teaching development and economics in Zimbabwe before establishing himself as a journalist and commentator in Cairo.
Throughout his career, Nkrumah remained closely engaged with African political, social and cultural affairs. As an editor and writer, he examined issues ranging from African unity and international solidarity to justice and human dignity.
The family said he remained committed to the ideals associated with his father’s legacy while developing his own intellectual identity and professional reputation.
Remembered As A Journalist And Pan-Africanist
The Nkrumah family described Gamal as a man of “profound intellectual curiosity, independence of thought and quiet conviction,” saying he carried forward the legacy of his father “in his own distinctive way.”
His death, the family said, represents a loss to relatives as well as to colleagues, friends and readers who valued his insight and engagement with major political and social questions.
The family expressed gratitude to the medical professionals and caregivers who looked after him in Cairo, as well as to the governments and people of Ghana and Egypt for their support.
Nkrumah is survived by his sister, Samia Nkrumah, a Ghanaian politician.
The family has requested privacy while it mourns his death and said details of memorial arrangements would be announced later.
May he rest in eternal peace.
