Gambiaj.com – The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of popular Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, who reportedly died at the age of 40 after a prolonged battle with cancer.
According to reports by The Sun Nigeria, family sources said the actor passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, after months of illness.
Ekubo’s prolonged absence from the public eye in recent months had sparked concern among fans and colleagues, as he stayed away from social media and public appearances for an extended period.
His last post on Instagram was reportedly made in December 2024, shortly after reports emerged that his engagement to US-based model Fancy Acholonu had been called off.
Following news of his death, tributes poured in from actors, musicians, activists, and fans across social media, with many describing him as a talented performer and a kind-hearted individual.
Popular actress Funke Akindele shared an emotional tribute on her Instagram Story, recalling their friendship and expressing regret that she was unable to see him one final time.
Actor Bolanle Ninalowo also mourned the late star, praying for strength for his family and loved ones, while singer Peter Okoye simply posted, “RIP.”
Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo described the news as difficult to process, paying tribute to Ekubo’s life, achievements, and legacy in Nollywood.
Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore described the late actor as a “rare talent,” saying Ekubo’s screen presence left a lasting impression on audiences.
Broadcaster Oseni Rufai also paid tribute, while actor Godwin Nnadiekwe described the news as heartbreaking, revealing that the late actor had already prepared his will.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong said Ekubo’s contributions to the entertainment industry would continue to inspire younger actors for years to come.
Before his death, Ekubo had occasionally responded to public curiosity about his unmarried status, stating in an Instagram post that he was focused on building his career and financial stability rather than rushing into marriage.
His relationship with Acholonu had attracted widespread public attention after the couple became engaged in 2021. However, their planned wedding was later called off the same year. In 2023, Acholonu publicly apologized and reaffirmed her love for the actor, saying he still had her heart.
Known for his charisma, versatility, and striking screen presence, Ekubo built a successful career in Nollywood through numerous hit films and television productions. Widely regarded as one of the industry’s most recognizable faces, he earned admiration from fans for both his acting talent and distinctive style.
His reported death marks a significant loss for Nollywood and the wider Nigerian entertainment community, where he was celebrated as both a gifted performer and a beloved colleague.
