Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia Prison Services has confirmed the escape of a convict prisoner identified as Baboucarr Mankabou from the Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Treatment Center, where he was reportedly receiving medical attention.
In a press release dated 21 May 2026, prison authorities said the inmate escaped while under supervision at the psychiatric facility, prompting an urgent response from security agencies.
The statement noted that preliminary findings have raised concerns about possible negligence and procedural lapses in the supervision arrangements at the time of the incident.
“The Gambia Prison Services acknowledges the concerns expressed by members of the public regarding this unfortunate incident and assures the public that the matter is receiving urgent attention,” the release stated.
Authorities said security agencies are actively working to locate and apprehend the escaped inmate and appealed to the public to cooperate with ongoing efforts by providing any useful information.
The Prison Services also urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
The Service further reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and maintaining public confidence in the country’s correctional system.
