Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – The World Bank has appointed Djibrilla Issa as its new Division Director overseeing operations in Senegal, Mauritania, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and The Gambia, the institution announced on Monday.
In his new role, Issa will supervise the bank’s development portfolio across the five countries, focusing on strengthening partnerships with governments and development stakeholders.
His mandate will prioritize private sector-led job creation, with targeted investments in infrastructure, agribusiness, digital connectivity, and human capital development.
Reacting to his appointment, Issa expressed readiness to deepen cooperation with the countries under his jurisdiction and to advance solutions tailored to the needs of their populations. He underscored the importance of accelerating economic transformation while ensuring social inclusion across the region.
A national of Niger, Issa joined the World Bank in 2001 as a financial sector specialist and has since held several senior leadership positions. His career spans multiple regions, where he has contributed to development financing, economic policy formulation, and institutional reform.
Prior to this appointment, he served as Practice Manager for Finance, Competitiveness, and Investment, covering the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. In that capacity, he led initiatives aimed at fostering inclusive growth, advancing economic reforms, and strengthening resilience in fragile and complex environments.
Issa also previously held senior roles at the Central Bank of West African States, where he worked in banking supervision and regulation. His professional background further includes research and academic contributions in trade and regional integration.
He will be based in Dakar, from where he will oversee a regional portfolio valued at nearly $6 billion.
