Blank Voter Cards Recovered After Break-In at Sanyang Registration Centre

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Police in Sanyang are investigating a reported break-in and theft at a voter registration center in Sanyang, Kombo South, during the ongoing supplementary voter registration exercise.

According to a statement from the police, the incident occurred on Saturday, May 10, 2026, at a voter registration office in the community.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a suspected mentally unstable person unlawfully entered the registration office and took consumable registration materials, including blank voter registration cards.

Police said officers visited the scene and immediately launched investigations into the matter. Authorities added that most of the stolen materials were later recovered.

The public will be duly informed of any further developments as investigations progress,” the police statement said.

Earlier reports circulating from the area had alleged that unknown individuals broke into the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) supplementary voter registration center in Sanyang on Saturday night and made away with a number of empty voter cards.

Sources also claimed that the Gammol office, which has been accommodating IEC officials during the registration exercise, reported additional missing items from a store where IEC materials were kept after working hours. The reported missing items include two laptops and pumping machines.

The matter was subsequently reported to the Sanyang Police Station.

The incident has also drawn political reactions. The chairman of the Brikama Area Council, Yankuba Darboe, questioned how the perpetrators allegedly knew where the voter cards and laptops were stored.

Darboe further alleged that the incident could be linked to attempts to influence the December 2026 elections, though no evidence has been publicly presented to support the claim.

The police will not do anything about it. It’s aimed at the best thief winning the election strategy of the incumbent. We are not fooled but vigilant and monitoring,” Darboe said.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
