Senegal’s President Faye Arrives in Banjul Today for Working Visit with President Barrow

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, Senegal) – President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye of Senegal is set to touch down in The Gambia today for a day-long working visit, in what State House describes as an occasion to deepen the bonds of solidarity and cooperation between the two neighboring nations.

According to a statement from the Office of the President, Mr. Faye is scheduled to land at Banjul International Airport at 10 a.m., where he will be received by President Adama Barrow alongside senior government officials. The visit was also confirmed by the state broadcaster, GRTS.

The public is hereby informed that His Excellency President Adama Barrow will receive his Senegalese counterpart, HE President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, today, Saturday, 30th May 2026, for a day-long working visit,” the State House statement reads, adding that the engagement “will enhance the solidarity and cooperation between the brotherly states of Senegal and The Gambia across various areas of common interests.”

The visit underscores the enduring and multifaceted relationship shared by the two West African neighbors, whose ties run far deeper than geography.

Senegal and The Gambia are bound by centuries of shared history, intertwined ethnic and cultural identities, and closely integrated economies, a reality that President Barrow has long captured with his oft-cited phrase, “We are two countries, but one people.”

Today’s working visit marks President Faye’s second trip to Banjul since taking office in April 2024, when he chose The Gambia as one of the first countries he visited as Senegal’s fifth president, a symbolic gesture that was widely interpreted as a reaffirmation of the special relationship between the two states.

During that initial visit, the two leaders held consultative talks and reaffirmed their commitment to the bilateral Presidential Council, a high-level mechanism designed to advance strategic cooperation across key sectors.

While the specific agenda for today’s discussions has not been made public, officials indicate the meeting will provide an opportunity to further advance collaboration on issues of mutual interest to both countries.

Areas of cooperation between Senegal and The Gambia have historically spanned security and defense, trade and economic integration, health, education, and the free movement of people and goods across their shared border.

The visit comes at a time of continued diplomatic engagement by President Faye, who has made strengthening ties with Senegal’s neighbors a hallmark of his foreign policy since assuming the presidency.

Further details of the outcome of the talks are expected to be released by the two governments following the conclusion of the visit.

The Gambia Journal will provide updates as more information becomes available.
