Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – President Adama Barrow on Tuesday received Senegal’s newly appointed Chief of General Staff, Admiral Oumar Wade, in Banjul as The Gambia and Senegal reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening military and security cooperation.
According to a statement from the Gambian presidency, the visit by Admiral Wade was aimed at further consolidating the long-standing defense and security partnership between the two neighboring countries.
The visit also marked Admiral Wade’s first official foreign trip since assuming office as Senegal’s top military officer, a move President Barrow described as a reflection of the “strong ties” binding the two nations.
During the meeting, President Barrow stressed the importance of sustained dialogue and regular consultations in deepening bilateral cooperation between Banjul and Dakar, citing the historical and cultural links shared by both countries.
The Gambian leader further urged both sides to continue promoting peaceful neighborly relations while commending progress made on border-related issues.
“He called for continued commitment, dedication, and openness,” the presidency said in the statement.
Focus on Regional Stability and Shared Security Challenges
Admiral Wade, for his part, expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded to him in Banjul and reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and cooperation between the two countries.
President Barrow congratulated the Senegalese military chief on his appointment and encouraged him to work diligently in order to leave behind a positive legacy.
The Gambian president also extended congratulations to Bassirou Diomaye Faye, recalling the Senegalese leader’s commitment to maintaining strong neighborly relations with The Gambia.
The meeting comes amid growing cooperation between The Gambia and Senegal, which share deep historical, cultural, and economic ties, as well as common security concerns.
Officials said Admiral Wade’s visit underscored the determination of both countries to further strengthen military and security collaboration at a time when the wider region continues to face evolving security challenges.
