Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – Senegal has officially endorsed former President Macky Sall’s candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye directing the government and the country’s diplomatic missions to actively campaign for his election.
The announcement was made on Monday in a statement issued by Senegal’s Ministry of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad, formalizing the country’s support for Sall’s bid to lead the world’s largest multilateral organization.
According to the ministry, President Faye reached the decision following a meeting with his predecessor, Macky Sall, at the Presidential Palace in Dakar, where the former head of state briefed him on his candidacy.
State Mobilizes Behind Candidacy
The Senegalese government said President Faye has instructed all government institutions and the country’s diplomatic network to fully mobilize in promoting Sall’s candidature among United Nations member states.
The presidency also called on all segments of Senegalese society to rally behind what it described as a national candidacy that serves both Senegal and the African continent.
“The President of the Republic invites all the nation’s vital forces to support this candidacy, which is now Senegal’s candidacy in the service of Africa and a more effective multilateral system,” the statement said.
Republican Unity
The foreign ministry said the meeting between President Faye and former President Sall was held in a cordial atmosphere and reflected the head of state’s commitment to dialogue, continuity of the state, and national unity on matters of strategic importance.
The endorsement marks a significant show of bipartisan support, bringing together Senegal’s current and former leaders behind a common diplomatic objective despite their political differences.
Sall served as President of Senegal from 2012 to 2024 before handing over power following the election of President Faye.
International Campaign
With the official endorsement now secured, Senegal is expected to intensify diplomatic efforts to build international support for Sall’s candidacy across the UN’s 193 member states.
If elected, Macky Sall would become the first Senegalese and one of the few Africans to serve as Secretary-General of the United Nations, a position responsible for leading the UN Secretariat and advancing the organization’s global peace, development, and humanitarian agenda.
