Gambia Reviews Middle East Crisis Impact on Economy, Supply Chains

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Office of the Vice President has disclosed that the government is actively assessing the potential impact of the ongoing Middle East crisis on The Gambia’s economy and supply chains as part of precautionary measures to safeguard essential commodities.

Vice President Mohammed B.S. Jallow chaired a cabinet sub-committee meeting convened to evaluate the possible implications of the crisis, particularly on the availability of fuel, food, fertilizer, and medicines.

The review comes at a critical time as the country prepares for the onset of the rainy season, a period typically marked by heightened demand for agricultural inputs.

The sub-committee, established under the leadership of President Adama Barrow, is also examining national stock levels and the resilience of supply chains amid global uncertainties linked to the Middle East situation.

As part of its immediate response, the government has already injected D200 million in subsidies in April to stabilize fuel prices, a move aimed at cushioning consumers from potential external shocks.

Authorities are also undertaking a comprehensive assessment of strategic reserves across critical sectors while developing contingency plans modeled on interventions deployed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The findings of the subcommittee are expected to be submitted to the cabinet for further deliberation and policy direction.

Government officials maintain that the overarching priority remains ensuring uninterrupted access to essential goods for all Gambians, despite mounting global pressures.
