Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Police have questioned Latrikunda NAM Hon. Yahya Menteng Sanyang over allegations of document forgery linked to electoral fraud as tensions rise around the ongoing nationwide supplementary voter registration exercise.
Multiple sources confirmed that Sanyang, a prominent figure in Mayor Talib Bensouda’s United Movement, has been invited to the police for questioning. Authorities have yet to issue a formal statement outlining the specifics of the questioning on him. Under Gambian law, electoral fraud constitutes a criminal offense.
Reports indicate that Sanyang had initially been allowed to go home but was later recalled by police. The circumstances surrounding that decision remain unclear.
Unverified Calls for Solidarity Circulate
Shortly after news of his presence at the police broke, a message purportedly from members of the United Movement began circulating on WhatsApp, urging supporters to gather at a police station in Fajikunda to show solidarity with Sanyang.
The message, widely shared in online groups, called on individuals to “go to the police station” following the revocation of his bail. However, the origin and authenticity of the message could not be independently verified by press time, and there were no confirmed reports of any public gathering.
Political Accusations Intensify
The development comes amid heightened political rhetoric surrounding the voter registration process. Earlier on Saturday, Presidential Adviser Momodou Sabally publicly accused Sanyang of being “caught red-handed in forgery and deception with intent to rig the electoral process.”
Sabally further alleged that the United Movement, yet to be formally registered as a political party, is attempting to enlist foreigners and minors to meet membership requirements. These claims have not been independently verified.
Sanyang has not publicly responded to the allegations, and it remains unclear whether formal charges will be filed.
The police are expected to provide further details as investigations continue.
