Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The National Assembly has adjourned sine die, bringing its first legislative sitting of 2026 to a close after passing seven bills, including key pieces of legislation expected to directly impact the lives of Gambians.
Among the laws adopted during the session is the National Food Security Corporation Bill 2025, which aims to strengthen the country’s food systems and improve access to essential commodities.
The legislation is widely seen as a significant step toward addressing rising food prices and ensuring the availability of food for citizens.
Moving the motion for adjournment, Majority Leader Billay G. Tunkara said the Assembly had fulfilled its mandate during the sitting, emphasizing that lawmakers remain committed to serving the best interests of the country.
“All matters considered in this Assembly are done in the best interest of every citizen,” he said, assuring the public of the Assembly’s dedication to accountability and national development.
During the sitting, lawmakers also exercised their oversight responsibilities by engaging several ministers, including the Vice President, on issues affecting their sectors.
Debates focused on critical national concerns such as cross-border tensions, internal displacement, and the protection of national sovereignty in border communities, issues that directly affect the safety and stability of citizens.
In addition, the Assembly passed other important legislation, including the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Bill 2026, which is expected to strengthen the registration of births and deaths and improve citizens’ access to essential services and legal identity.
Several committee reports were also adopted following investigations and oversight visits conducted across the country.
Majority Leader Billay G. Tunkara commended members for their dedication throughout the sitting and called for continued unity and responsible leadership. The motion to adjourn was seconded and approved without objection, officially bringing the sitting to a close.
