Senegal: Media Workers Accuse Global Média of Retaliation Amid Escalating Labor Dispute

Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – A group of journalists and media technicians in dispute with Global Média Group, the owner of TOUBA TV, OCEAN FM radio, and the daily newspaper 24H, has denounced what it describes as a fresh escalation in its conflict with the company’s leadership.

In a strongly worded statement, the collective of workers accused the group, headed by Senegalese billionaire Mbackiou Faye, of unfair labor practices and retaliatory actions against employees seeking to assert their rights through legal channels.

According to the group, many of the affected workers have dedicated between 10 and 15 years of service to Global Média without benefiting from their long-standing commitment.

They allege that most employees earn between CFA75,000 and CFA100,000 per month, paid in cash over the counter under a non-banked system.

The workers argue that this arrangement deprives them of access to essential financial services, including bank loans, verification of social security contributions, and the use of mobile financial services.

While the employees of his media group endure daily financial instability, billionaire Mbackiou Faye is well-known in Senegal and other countries for his financial generosity and charitable deeds totaling millions of CFA francs.

Frustrated by what they describe as years of unrecognized effort, the workers took their grievances to the Dakar Labour Court in a bid to secure enforcement of their rights under existing labor laws.

However, the collective claims the situation has since deteriorated. It alleges that the group’s president issued formal instructions to security personnel to deny access to company premises to seven employees who had filed complaints before the court.

The workers’ group has condemned the move as an “unacceptable act of retaliation” and a serious violation of the fundamental right of workers to seek legal redress. It further described the development as a “concerning drift” in the handling of the dispute.

In response, the collective says it is considering all necessary legal and advocacy measures to ensure compliance with labor laws and to restore the dignity of the affected workers.

As part of its next steps, the group has invited members of the national press to a public statement scheduled for Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in front of Global Média’s headquarters. The briefing is expected to outline the workers’ grievances and provide further details on planned actions.

We remain determined to ensure that law, dignity, and justice prevail for all concerned workers,” the statement concluded.
