Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – El Malick Ndiaye has announced his resignation as President of Senegal’s National Assembly, saying his decision was driven by his vision for public responsibility, institutional stability, and the “superior interest of the nation.”
In a statement published on his digital platforms, Ndiaye said the resignation came after “deep reflection” carried out “in silence, responsibility, and a sense of state.”
“This decision proceeds from a personal choice, guided above all by my conception of institutions, public responsibility, and the superior interest of the nation,” he wrote.
The outgoing speaker stressed that preserving Senegal’s institutional stability, civil peace, and national cohesion was central to his decision.
“At a time when I am leaving this high office, I remain deeply convinced that the stability of our institutions, respect for republican dialogue, the preservation of civil peace, national cohesion, and the superior interest of Senegal must remain, in all circumstances, our common compass,” he stated.
Ndiaye also suggested that the country was going through a sensitive political moment requiring restraint and duty from public officials.
“In public responsibilities as in the trials of national life, there are moments when the interest of the country commands us to privilege elevation, discernment, and a sense of duty. It is in this spirit, and in this spirit alone, that I took this decision,” he added.
During his tenure as head of parliament, Ndiaye said he devoted his efforts to strengthening the National Assembly, promoting transparency and oversight, modernizing parliamentary work, and enhancing the institution’s profile both nationally and internationally.
He thanked lawmakers from both the ruling majority and opposition, parliamentary staff, his cabinet members, and the Senegalese people for their trust and collaboration throughout his time in office.
The former speaker also expressed gratitude to members and supporters of the ruling PASTEF party, under whose banner he was elected.
Despite stepping down, Ndiaye said he would continue serving Senegal and remain committed to democracy, the republic, and the country’s collective ambitions.
His resignation comes at a politically significant moment in Senegal following recent tensions within the country’s leadership.
