Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Executive, Legislature and Judiciary have convened for the first time in The Gambia’s history at the Maiden Tripartite Conference on the Commonwealth Latimer House Principles, marking what officials described as a significant step towards strengthening collaboration, accountability, and the rule of law.
The three-day conference, taking place from July 22 to 24, is jointly organised by the Judiciary in collaboration with the Executive and the National Assembly. It brings together the heads of the three arms of government to develop a practical framework for governance based on the Commonwealth Latimer House Principles.
The conference seeks to move beyond discussions on the principles and establish mechanisms that promote cooperation among state institutions while preserving their constitutional independence.
Barrow Reaffirms Separation of Powers
Opening the conference, President Adama Barrow said democracy is strongest when the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary operate independently while working harmoniously in the national interest.
He said the gathering reflects The Gambia’s renewed commitment to the Latimer House Principles, which emphasize accountability, judicial independence, and the rule of law as the foundation of democratic governance.
“The strength of our nation lies not in the power of one branch, but in the balance among all three,” President Barrow said.
He described the conference as more than a forum for dialogue, saying it represents a collective pledge by each arm of government to uphold its constitutional responsibilities.
According to the President, the Executive will continue to govern with accountability, the Legislature will legislate responsibly, and the Judiciary will adjudicate independently and fairly.
Commitment to Rule of Law
President Barrow stressed that the rule of law remains non-negotiable and is essential for maintaining peace, delivering justice, and achieving sustainable development.
Organizers said the conference demonstrates a shared commitment by the country’s institutions to work in a constitutional, complementary, and constructive manner while safeguarding fundamental rights and strengthening democratic governance.
The Maiden Tripartite Conference is expected to produce a framework that reinforces cooperation between the three branches of government while respecting the constitutional separation of powers, with the ultimate goal of enhancing public confidence in state institutions and the administration of justice.
