Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The long-anticipated restructuring of National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) has entered a decisive phase following the submission of a final report outlining its dissolution into two separate entities.
The task force mandated to oversee the unbundling process formally presented its report to the Minister of Petroleum, Energy and Mines, Nani Juwara, marking the culmination of months of technical and institutional review since its inauguration on July 23, 2025.
At the core of the report is a comprehensive roadmap that sets the stage for NAWEC’s transformation into two single-purpose companies: the Gambia National Electricity Company (GNEC) and the Gambia National Water Company (GNWC).
The proposed restructuring is designed to separate electricity generation and distribution from water production and supply, a move widely seen as critical to improving efficiency, governance, and service delivery in both sectors.
According to the report, the transition will involve a phased dismantling of NAWEC’s current integrated structure, with assets, personnel, and operational mandates to be systematically allocated between the two new entities.
The creation of GNEC and GNWC is expected to allow for more targeted investment, clearer regulatory oversight, and enhanced operational accountability.
With the report now formally submitted, the process shifts to the government’s implementation phase, where policy, legal, and administrative steps will be undertaken to operationalize the recommendations.
This is expected to include legislative adjustments, institutional realignment, and stakeholder engagement to ensure a smooth transition.
Receiving the report, Minister Juwara commended the task force for what he described as a diligent and methodical effort in addressing the complexities of the reform. He noted that the document provides a solid framework to guide the government toward successfully executing the unbundling process.
The submission effectively signals that the groundwork has been laid for one of the most significant reforms in The Gambia’s public utility sector, with the eventual emergence of GNEC and GNWC poised to redefine the management of electricity and water services nationwide.
