Diomaye Reportedly Seeks Constitutional Council Opinion on Sonko’s Return to Parliament

Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has reportedly moved discreetly to seek the opinion of the Constitutional Council amid efforts by lawmakers from the ruling Pastef party to reinstate Ousmane Sonko in the National Assembly, according to Senegalese media reports.

The reports claim that President Diomaye Faye, described as closely monitoring political developments despite maintaining a low public profile on the issue, “did not remain idle” in the face of attempts by Pastef deputies to facilitate Sonko’s return to parliament.

According to the same sources, the Senegalese head of state quietly referred the matter to the Constitutional Council, commonly referred to as “the seven wise men,” seeking legal clarification on the legality of the process envisaged by Pastef lawmakers.

The developments come amid heightened political tensions following President Diomaye Faye’s dismissal of Ousmane Sonko from the post of prime minister last Friday.

On Sunday, El Malick Ndiaye resigned as president of the National Assembly, a move widely interpreted as paving the way for institutional realignments within the ruling camp.

A plenary session of the National Assembly has been convened for Tuesday in connection with the unfolding developments. However, the date for a possible meeting of the Constitutional Council has not yet been made public.

The situation has fueled intense political and legal debate in Senegal over whether Sonko, after leaving the premiership, can automatically reclaim his parliamentary seat or whether additional constitutional procedures are required.
