Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Turkey’s new ambassador to The Gambia, Özgür Gökmen, has formally assumed charge of the Turkish diplomatic mission in Banjul, taking over from Fahri Türker Oba after arriving in the country three days ago.
Gökmen presented copies of his letters of credence to Foreign Affairs Minister Sering Modou Njie on Monday, formally beginning his assignment as Ankara’s representative in The Gambia.
His appointment marks a transition in Turkey’s diplomatic representation in Banjul, with Gökmen now set to lead efforts to advance bilateral relations and cooperation between Turkey and The Gambia.
The new ambassador succeeds Oba, who just left The Gambia after two and a half years in the country.
Reflecting on his tenure in an interview with QTV last Tuesday, Oba described his experience in The Gambia as rewarding, both professionally and culturally.
He also praised the country’s stability and potential while urging Gambians not to take those qualities for granted.
“This country is a gem,” Oba said. “You still have some steps to go, but you’re on the right track.”
Gökmen now takes the helm of Turkey’s diplomatic mission in Banjul and begins his tenure as the country’s new ambassador.
