Barrow Backs Macky Sall’s UN Secretary-General Bid After State House Meeting

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – President Adama Barrow has pledged The Gambia’s support for former Senegalese President Macky Sall’s bid to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations following a meeting at the State House in Banjul.

Mr. Sall, who is seeking the backing of African leaders for his candidacy, met President Barrow on Saturday as part of a regional diplomatic tour aimed at building support across the continent and beyond.

Speaking after the meeting, the former Senegalese leader said he traveled to Banjul directly after visiting Dakar because he considered it important to personally consult President Barrow and thank him for his advice and encouragement.

I could not come to Dakar without coming to Banjul to greet my brother Adama and thank him for all his support and advice,” Sall said.

Seeking support for UN bid

The former Senegalese president said he visited Banjul to seek President Barrow’s prayers and political support for his campaign to lead the world’s largest multilateral organization.

According to Sall, President Barrow assured him of his full support for the candidacy.

The State House also said the meeting focused on the importance of African unity in global affairs. During the discussions, Sall reiterated that African countries should coordinate their efforts around the UN’s key pillars of peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development.

Call for African unity

During the discussions, Mr. Sall stressed the need for African countries to speak with one voice at a time when the international system is facing growing challenges.

He noted that multilateralism is becoming increasingly fragile, making it even more important for African nations to work together to strengthen global cooperation.

As Africans, we really need to work together hand in hand,” he said, adding that the continent should play a stronger role in promoting the United Nations’ core priorities of peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development.

Sall argued that these issues are particularly important for Africa, where security challenges continue to affect several regions while development remains a pressing priority for millions of people.

The Banjul visit forms part of Sall’s wider consultations with African and international leaders as he seeks to build momentum for his campaign to succeed the current UN Secretary-General.
