During the meeting, the former president briefed Faye on the progress of his campaign and formally sought the support of Senegal for his candidacy.
The presidency said the discussions centered on the status of Sall’s bid and the importance of national backing as the selection process advances.
President Faye listened to the presentation “with courtesy” and welcomed the former head of state’s démarche, the statement added.
Commitment to keep the presidency informed
The meeting also produced an agreement on continued communication between the two men. Macky Sall committed to regularly updating President Faye on developments at each stage of the UN Secretary-General selection process.
The presidency described the meeting as reflecting “the continuity of the state and the permanence of institutions beyond political alternations,” noting that it brought together two leaders with different political trajectories and convictions in the interest of the nation.
The audience marked the first publicly announced meeting between President Faye and his predecessor focused on Sall’s international candidacy since he declared his intention to seek the leadership of the United Nations.
