Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – A member of the National Assembly has called for a new investigation into cattle believed to be linked to former Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh, amid concerns that some of his assets may still be in private hands.
During Monday’s sitting of the National Assembly of The Gambia, the National Assembly Member (NAM) for Foni Kansala, Hon. Almameh Gibba, urged authorities to conduct a fresh probe while contributing to the debate on the report of the Special Select Committee examining the sale and disposal of assets identified by the Janneh Commission.
Hon. Gibba told lawmakers that there are individuals who are still in possession of cattle believed to belong to Jammeh and stressed that the matter requires proper investigation.
“The government should look into how these cattle were handled and who currently has them. The investigation should include anyone involved, including security personnel if necessary,” he said.
According to information presented to the Assembly, two members of the Gambia Armed Forces – Major Alieu Sowe and Corporal Modou S. Bah – were reportedly involved in managing some of the cattle at Farato Farm.
Lawmakers were further informed that Corporal Bah allegedly maintains a herd of cattle in Nyamina and is reportedly paying a monthly fee of D5,000 to a cattle rearer responsible for keeping the animals.
The motion put forward by Hon. Gibba was seconded on the floor and subsequently accepted by the Assembly. It will now be included as an addendum to the committee’s report and recommendation.
The proposal reflects continuing concerns among lawmakers that not all assets associated with Jammeh have been fully traced or properly accounted for following investigations by the Janneh Commission into the financial dealings of the former regime.
