Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Police have launched an investigation into a fire outbreak at a madrassa in Jambur, West Coast Region, which claimed the lives of two minors and left two others injured.
According to the police, the incident occurred on the night of April 8, 2026, and was reported to officers at the Farato Police Station. Emergency responders swiftly attended the scene following the report.
Authorities said the fire resulted in the deaths of two children aged seven and eight. Two other minors sustained injuries and were transported to a medical facility for treatment.
Preliminary reports indicate that the blaze may have been caused by an electrical fault. However, police said the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains subject to further technical investigations.
The bodies of the deceased children have been transferred to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital mortuary for further examination.
Police said the investigation is being conducted in collaboration with relevant institutions, including the Gambia Fire and Rescue Service and the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), to determine the precise circumstances that led to the tragedy.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged members of the public to adhere to fire safety precautions, particularly in residential and institutional settings, to help prevent similar incidents.
