Veteran U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham Dies Suddenly at 71 While Seeking Fifth Term

Gambiaj.com – (WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Veteran Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has died at the age of 71 following what his office described as a “brief and sudden illness,” bringing to an end more than three decades of public service in the United States Congress.

Graham’s office announced his death early Sunday, saying his family had requested privacy during the difficult time and expressed gratitude for prayers and support.

The South Carolina lawmaker was serving as chair of the Senate Budget Committee and held seats on several influential committees, including the Judiciary Committee, the Committee on Appropriations, and the Environment and Public Works Committee. At the time of his death, he was campaigning for a fifth term in the U.S. Senate.

A Leading Voice on National Security

Widely regarded as one of the Republican Party’s strongest advocates of a robust U.S. military and an assertive foreign policy, Graham built his political career around national security and international affairs. A former U.S. Air Force officer, he was known for his outspoken support for America’s allies and his hawkish stance on global conflicts.

His death came shortly after returning from a visit to Ukraine, where he had met with Ukrainian leaders to discuss the country’s ongoing war with Russia. Graham had been scheduled to appear on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday morning.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky paid tribute to the late senator, describing him as a steadfast friend of Ukraine during some of its darkest moments.

Zelensky said Graham had visited Ukraine ten times since Russia’s full-scale invasion and had remained in constant contact with Ukrainian officials. He credited the senator with supporting stronger sanctions against Russia and helping advance initiatives aimed at bringing peace closer.

America and the world have lost a determined leader,” Zelensky said, adding that Ukrainians would always remember Graham’s admiration for the courage of the country’s defenders.

Trump Leads Tributes

U.S. President Donald Trump was among the first political leaders to react to the news, describing Graham as “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known.”

He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, adding that details regarding funeral arrangements would be announced later.

Colleagues Mourn Longtime Senator

Tributes also poured in from Graham’s colleagues in the Senate, many highlighting his decades of service and influence on U.S. policy.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he was heartbroken by the loss of his friend and colleague, praising Graham’s military service and commitment to advancing American interests around the world.

Lindsey’s long and dedicated service in the Air Force and in Congress carried him to far-flung regions of the world. He was a strong advocate for the United States and a strong ally to freedom-loving countries across the globe,” Thune said.

Fellow South Carolina Senator Tim Scott described Graham as both a statesman and a close friend.

From his humble beginnings to the Senate floor, Lindsey always led with faith, family, and South Carolina first,” Scott said, adding that Graham brought humour and optimism even during difficult moments.

Meanwhile, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker said Graham’s influence on both domestic and foreign policy would be impossible to replace.

There are no words to describe Lindsey Graham, my friend of more than three decades,” Wicker said. “He stood solidly for freedom and strength and fought for liberty across the globe.

Graham’s death leaves vacant one of South Carolina’s two Senate seats and ends the career of one of the most recognisable figures in modern Republican politics, whose influence on U.S. foreign policy extended well beyond Washington.
