Senegal Adopts Judicial Cooperation Agreement With The Gambia

Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – Senegal’s National Assembly on Thursday adopted four major bills presented by Foreign Affairs and African Integration Minister Cheikh Niang, including a key agreement aimed at strengthening judicial cooperation between Senegal and The Gambia.

The judicial cooperation accord is designed to enhance collaboration between the two neighboring countries in addressing a range of shared security and criminal challenges. According to Senegalese authorities, the agreement will provide a stronger legal framework for combating terrorism, organized crime, cross-border trafficking, tax fraud, and customs fraud.

Presenting the legislation before lawmakers, Minister Niang underscored the importance of establishing modern and effective mechanisms of cooperation between Senegal and The Gambia, whose ties are rooted in deep historical, human, and economic connections.

The minister noted that growing transnational threats require closer coordination between judicial and law enforcement institutions on both sides of the border. He said the agreement would facilitate information sharing, legal assistance, and coordinated action in investigations involving crimes that transcend national boundaries.

The adoption of the accord comes as both countries continue to strengthen bilateral relations and deepen cooperation in areas ranging from security and trade to regional integration.

In addition to the judicial cooperation agreement, lawmakers approved three other bills aimed at reinforcing Senegal’s international commitments and strategic partnerships.

The Senegalese government said the newly adopted legislation reflects its determination to uphold international obligations while safeguarding the country’s strategic interests in an increasingly complex global environment.

Authorities argued that the measures are particularly important at a time when countries face growing security, environmental, and geopolitical challenges that require stronger international cooperation.

The passage of the bills marks another step in Senegal’s efforts to strengthen regional partnerships and improve collective responses to threats affecting West Africa.
