Gambiaj.com – (RABAT, Morocco) – The Gambia and the Kingdom of Morocco have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their bilateral strategic partnership, following a high-level diplomatic meeting in the Moroccan capital on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
Sering Modou Njie, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, traveled to Rabat as a special envoy of President Adama Barrow, where he was received by his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad.
Minister Njie carried a written message from President Barrow addressed personally to King Mohammed VI, underlining the significance attached to the visit at the highest levels of the Gambian government.
Speaking to the press following the meeting, Minister Njie described the bonds between the two nations in warm and historic terms, highlighting the ties of friendship and fraternity that have long united The Gambia and Morocco, and reaffirming the shared desire of both governments to strengthen their bilateral strategic partnership in line with the vision of both King Mohammed VI and President Barrow.
“The relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Gambia are excellent,” Njie said, pointing to what he described as cordial and mutually beneficial ties built on shared values of friendship, fraternity, and solidarity.
Central to the Gambian minister’s address was an expression of deep gratitude to King Mohammed VI on behalf of President Barrow, the government, and the people of The Gambia for Morocco’s continued support in advancing the country’s socio-economic development.
Foreign Minister Njie praised the Moroccan monarch’s consistent commitment to growing the relationship between the two countries, a commitment he said has been made tangible through the signing of several bilateral agreements and the launch of what he described as structuring projects that have strengthened cooperation and promoted exchanges between the Moroccan and Gambian people.
The visit also served as a platform to signal The Gambia’s firm determination to further broaden bilateral cooperation across areas of common interest, with Minister Njie reaffirming both countries’ mutual desire to consolidate their strategic partnership going forward.
The diplomatic engagement comes at a time when The Gambia has been actively strengthening ties with key African and international partners as part of its broader foreign policy agenda under President Barrow.
Morocco, a major continental power with deep historical and economic links across West Africa, remains one of The Gambia’s important partners in areas ranging from infrastructure to education and health.
No specific details of the written message delivered to King Mohammed VI were made public, but the tone and content of Minister Njie’s statement to the press left little ambiguity about its intent, to signal Banjul’s strong commitment to a partnership that both sides view as strategic, enduring, and ripe for deeper engagement.
