NAM Raises Alarm Over Rising Hate Speech and Tribalism, Urges Government Action

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The National Assembly Member for Lower Badibu, Hon. Kemo Gassama, on Thursday sounded the alarm over the growing threat of hate speech and tribalism in The Gambia, describing the trend as a grave danger to national unity and peaceful coexistence.

Tabling the Matter of the Day before the Assembly, Hon. Gassama expressed deep concern that hate speech is being actively fueled and amplified by politicians and individuals in positions of authority, the very people who should be leading as agents of peace and unity.

Hate speech must never be tolerated in any civilized society. It is dangerous, divisive, and destructive. It creates mistrust among citizens, fuels hostility, and undermines the spirit of national cohesion that we have worked so hard to build as a people,” he emphasized.

The Lower Badibu lawmaker further warned that tribal profiling and ethnic discrimination are on the rise, pushing citizens to judge one another by ethnic background rather than by character or contribution to society.

Hon. Gassama called on the government to enforce existing laws against hate speech and tribal incitement without fear or favor and urged institutions responsible for maintaining peace and national cohesion to act swiftly and decisively against those who seek to divide the nation along ethnic lines.

His tabling sparked a broader debate on the floor of the House, with Hon. Members weighing in on the dangers of hate speech and the corrosive effects of tribal politics on the country’s democratic fabric.
