Gambian Journalist Ousman Marong Wins Prestigious Canada Farm Radio International Award

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Gambian journalist Ousman A. Marong has been named among 10 African broadcasters honored by Farm Radio International (FRI) for outstanding contributions to food security and rural development through radio journalism.

Marong, who serves as the General Manager of Vibes FM, received the George Atkins Communication Award, an annual recognition presented to radio broadcasters in developing countries who demonstrate exceptional commitment to supporting small-scale farmers and rural communities.

The Canada-based non-profit organization said the award recognizes radio programs that contribute to improving food security, reducing poverty, and addressing the specific needs of rural populations across Africa.

Founded in 1979, Farm Radio International has worked with more than 1,450 media partners across 38 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including public, commercial, community, religious and NGO-affiliated radio stations.

The organization focuses on delivering interactive and locally relevant agricultural information aimed at helping small-scale farmers adopt sustainable practices and adapt to climate change.

Recipients of the George Atkins Communication Award receive a certificate, a cash prize, and a Purpose Prize worth 500 Canadian dollars. The award is named in memory of George Atkins, the founder of Farm Radio International.

Reacting to his recognition, Marong described his journalism philosophy as one rooted in telling African stories with authenticity and purpose.

“My approach to journalism, which I like to call the ‘journalism of necessity,’ is all about sharing African stories with the depth, dignity, and unwavering commitment to truth that RFI embodies,” he said.

He added that the recognition was both a personal achievement and a broader call to responsible journalism.

Winning this award wasn’t just a personal milestone; it also serves as a call to uphold the spirit of journalism that informs, inspires, and transforms,” Marong stated.

This recognition truly feels deserved. It wasn’t about favoritism or connections; it was earned through hard work. We all know that good things don’t come easily. Every success story has someone behind the scenes who has put in the effort to ensure that the final product shines.

According to the organization, applicants for the award must be employed by a radio station that has partnered with Farm Radio International for at least one year and must possess a minimum of three years of broadcasting experience, including volunteer work.

Applicants are also required to submit a completed application form, a photo of themselves at work, and a recorded episode of their program.

Busi Ngcebetsha, Manager of Just Communication Network, congratulated Marong in an email accompanying the signing of certificates for this year’s winners, saying Farm Radio International was impressed by his selection as one of the recipients.

Other winners of the 2026 George Atkins Communication Award include broadcasters from Ethiopia, Mali, Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Benin.
