Gambiaj.com – (KANIFING, The Gambia) – Fourteen youths affiliated with Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), who were arrested in connection with the movement’s planned first anniversary gathering at the Westfield Youth Monument, have been formally charged and granted bail by the Kanifing Magistrate’s Court.
The accused persons were charged with unlawful assembly and common nuisance following their arrest during a gathering organised to mark the group’s first anniversary at the Westfield Youth Monument.
Earlier in the day, the youths reportedly rejected a police self-bail arrangement, insisting that authorities either release them unconditionally or formally arraign them before a court.
According to the accused persons, if the authorities believed an offence had been committed, they should be brought before a magistrate to understand the basis of their arrest rather than accepting release without charges.
Since its formation, GALA has intensified calls for greater accountability and transparency in the handling and disposal of assets belonging to former President Yahya Jammeh. The movement has also participated in advocacy on broader public concerns, including campaigns calling for reduced internet data prices.
During Monday’s court proceedings, each of the accused persons was granted bail in the sum of D80,000 with one Gambian surety. The court further ordered all sureties to surrender their National Identity Cards and ensure the attendance of the accused persons throughout the proceedings.
The matter was adjourned to 11 June 2026 at 12 noon for continuation.
The arrests and subsequent court proceedings have sparked public debate, with some activists and members of the public expressing concerns over citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
Authorities, however, maintain that public demonstrations must be conducted in accordance with the law and established public order regulations.
