Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Media Development Specialist Demba Kandeh has called on journalists and media institutions to immediately comply with the Media Council of The Gambia, describing it as a critical step toward reinforcing self-regulation and professional standards in the country’s media landscape.
Kandeh made the remarks during the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, where discussions focused on media reform, editorial independence, and the role of regulatory frameworks in The Gambia.
He emphasized that the Media Council plays a central role in promoting accountability within the industry but noted that its effectiveness depends largely on the level of participation from media practitioners.
“All professional journalists must submit to the Media Council now, not tomorrow, not the day after, but today,” Kandeh said, underscoring the urgency of his appeal.
While acknowledging existing gaps in the country’s self-regulatory mechanisms, Kandeh argued that these shortcomings should be addressed through collective action from within the media fraternity rather than through external intervention.
He added that stronger engagement with the Media Council would help build a more credible and functional system capable of handling public complaints and upholding ethical standards across the profession.
His comments come at a time when stakeholders are intensifying conversations around strengthening media governance structures and safeguarding editorial independence in The Gambia.
