Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has clarified that it has not received any application or request for a public protest being circulated on social media in connection with the death of Yunusa Mbaye.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the police said they had taken note of an online publication calling for a protest on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the entrance of the National Assembly in Banjul, demanding justice for the deceased.
According to the GPF, no individual, group or organisation has sought approval to organise a procession, demonstration or protest related to the social media call.
“The GPF wishes to state that no application or request has been received from any individual, group, or organisation seeking permit to hold a procession, demonstration, or protest in relation to the said publication,” the statement said.
The police reminded the public that demonstrations, public processions and assemblies are regulated under Gambian law and require prior approval from the Office of the Inspector General of Police.
The force stressed that, in the absence of such approval, no person or group is authorised to occupy public spaces or stage a protest.
As a result, the GPF advised members of the public to disregard calls to participate in what it described as an unauthorised protest. It also urged those responsible for circulating the publication to comply with legal provisions governing public assemblies and avoid actions that could lead to a breach of public order.
The police further reaffirmed their commitment to facilitating lawful assemblies and the exercise of freedom of expression while maintaining public order, public safety and national security.
The social media call comes amid public interest surrounding the death of Yunusa Mbaye, although police did not provide further details on the circumstances of the case in the statement.
