Gambiaj.com – (SANYANG, The Gambia) – The 4.5-kilometer of a new 4.5-kilometer beach-side road in Sanyang has raised hopes that improved access to the coastal community will bring increased economic activity, new businesses, and jobs for residents.
President Adama Barrow officially opened the road on Tuesday, describing the project as an important investment aimed at unlocking Sanyang’s economic potential and strengthening connectivity along the country’s coastal corridor.
Sanyang’s economy is closely linked to agriculture, fishing, trade, and tourism, with its coastline serving as an important source of livelihoods. The new road is expected to make it easier for residents, traders, and visitors to access the area and transport goods.
For many residents, however, the real test of the project will be whether improved infrastructure translates into tangible improvements in their daily lives and livelihoods.
“We are confident that the completion of the Sanyang Beach Side Road will massively improve access to the coastal area, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and create better conditions for businesses and investment,” President Barrow said.
He said farmers, fishermen, traders, and entrepreneurs could benefit from the improved connectivity, while young people and women could find new economic opportunities.
The President also said easier access to Sanyang’s coastal attractions could help attract more visitors and create opportunities for tourism-related businesses.
Part of a Wider Development Plan
The road was constructed under EPC Lot 9 as part of the government’s nationwide road development program. According to President Barrow, the project also forms part of broader efforts to improve connectivity along The Gambia’s coastal corridor.
He linked the investment to the country’s longer-term economic plans, including the proposed development of a Deep-Sea Port, saying reliable road infrastructure would become increasingly important in connecting coastal communities, economic centers, and strategic assets.
“As The Gambia prepares for the development of the upcoming Deep-Sea Port, the importance of reliable road infrastructure connecting our coastal communities, economic centers, and strategic assets will become greater,” he said.
Barrow said the true value of the road should ultimately be measured by the businesses it supports, the investments it attracts, the visitors it brings, the goods it helps reach new markets and the opportunities it creates for young people and women.
Development and Environmental Concerns
The President also cautioned that increased investment and development along the coast must be managed responsibly, with environmental protection and community participation remaining priorities.
“Our coastline is becoming increasingly important to the future of The Gambia,” he said, citing its potential to support livelihoods, tourism, trade, investment, and regional economic activity.
He urged residents to protect the new infrastructure and called on road users to observe traffic regulations and respect pedestrians.
The government commended the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, the National Roads Authority, contractors, engineers, local authorities, and residents for their contributions to the completion of the project.
President Barrow subsequently declared the Sanyang Beach Side Road officially open to the public.
For Sanyang, the road marks the completion of a major infrastructure project. Its longer-term significance, however, will depend on whether improved access delivers what residents are likely to value most: more jobs, thriving businesses, and meaningful economic opportunities.
