Barrow Inaugurates 91km Kiang West Road Network, Signals End to Seasonal Isolation in LRR

Gambiaj.com – (KIANG, The Gambia) – President Adama Barrow has officially inaugurated a 91-kilometre road network in Kiang West, Lower River Region (LRR), marking what he described as the end of decades of seasonal isolation for communities in the area.

The inauguration ceremony, held in Sankandi, saw the president cut the ribbon on the newly completed roads, which are expected to significantly improve mobility and access across Kiang West. The project, valued at over 1.2 billion dalasis, represents one of the major infrastructure investments in the region.

Funded by the government, the road development spans 87 kilometers and is being executed in two phases by Gai Construction, with consultancy oversight provided by Cityscape Associates.

Phase One of the project involves the construction of the 39-kilometer Sankandi–Karantaba trunk road, a key artery linking major settlements within Kiang West. Phase Two focuses on expanding community access through 48 kilometers of feeder roads, divided into ten sections and connecting more than 20 villages.

Officials say the expanded road network will enhance connectivity, improve road safety, and facilitate easier movement of people and goods within the Lower River Region.

The project is widely seen as a critical step toward integrating previously hard-to-reach communities into the national economy, particularly during the rainy season when poor road conditions historically cut off large parts of Kiang West.
