Gambiaj.com – (SUKUTA-JABANG, The Gambia) – President Adama Barrow says the Sukuta-Jabang Overpass could be opened to traffic by the end of October, with construction now about 90% complete.
Barrow made the disclosure on Monday during an inspection of the overpass, which forms part of Phase Three of the Bertil Harding Highway Project.
The National Roads Authority (NRA) said all major structural works on the overpass have been completed. The remaining works include waterproofing the bridge deck, installing handrails and streetlights, and completing road signage and road markings.
According to the NRA, waterproofing works are expected to begin this week, while handrail installation is scheduled for completion by September 25. Other outstanding works are expected to be completed by the end of November.
Barrow said the overpass was designed to address persistent congestion at the Sukuta-Jabang roundabout, which has become a major traffic bottleneck along the Greater Banjul Area corridor.
He said the government decided to construct the overpass following repeated complaints from motorists and residents about congestion at the roundabout.
“So far, I’m very impressed because they are on target. This roundabout is almost 90% complete. And according to the contractor, it can be open for traffic by the end of October,” Barrow said.
The President said the project was funded with taxpayers’ money and should therefore deliver lasting value to the public.
He described the overpass as a “legacy project”, saying the structure was designed for durability and carries a guarantee of more than 100 years.
The project is being implemented by contractor Arezki S.A. and is expected to improve traffic flow and connectivity along the Sukuta-Jabang corridor once operational.
