UMC Leader Talib Bensouda Sends Support to Sacked Senegal PM Ousmane Sonko

Gambiaj.com – (KANIFING, The Gambia) – Talib Ahmed Bensouda has addressed a message of solidarity to Ousmane Sonko following the latter’s dismissal by Bassirou Diomaye Faye amid escalating political tensions in Senegal.

In a statement shared shortly after Sonko’s removal from office on Friday, the Kanifing Mayor praised the Senegalese opposition figure’s political journey and his influence on young Africans across the continent.

Leadership is not only defined by the positions we hold, but by the courage, conviction, and hope we inspire in others,” Bensouda wrote.

The UMC leader said Sonko had inspired many young Africans “to believe in dignity, sacrifice, and service to country,” adding that difficult moments often reveal “the strength of character and the depth of one’s commitment.

Bensouda also called for calm and stability in Senegal following the dramatic political development.

As neighbors and brothers, we continue to pray for peace, unity, and stability in Senegal. May wisdom, calm, and dignity guide all sides in this moment,” he stated.

The Gambian politician further reflected on leadership and public service in Africa, saying a new generation of leaders must remember that “power is temporary, but service, principle, and the people’s trust are what endure.

History is long, and every chapter brings new lessons and new opportunities to serve,” he added, before encouraging Sonko to “stay strong and remain encouraged.”

Talib Bensouda has in recent years developed close political ties with Senegal’s ruling PASTEF and its leader Ousmane Sonko. His relationship is particularly strong with Aboubacar Djamil Sané, a founding member of PASTEF and one of Sonko’s close political allies.

Last week, during the official launch of the Unite Movement for Change in The Gambia, PASTEF dispatched representatives from Dakar to attend both the party convention and the political rally held at Buffer Zone in support of the new movement.

Sonko’s dismissal by President Diomaye Faye marks a major political turning point in Senegal after months of reported tensions and power struggles within the country’s executive leadership.
