Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia Police Force has launched a search for four boys reported missing in Kunkujang, sparking growing concern over their safety amid fears they may have attempted an irregular migration journey.
In a public notice issued on Sunday, police said the children were last seen on Friday, April 18, 2026, after attending Juma prayers but failed to return home.
The missing boys have been identified as Jammeh, 14; Modou Lamin Gaye, 14; Gibi Sallah, 13; and Mustapha Badjie, 14.
According to the police, initial reports indicate the boys were seen after prayers and may have subsequently left the area. Authorities confirmed that the case has been formally reported and that search efforts are ongoing.
“Given their ages, there are serious concerns for their safety, and the public is urged to assist in locating them,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, information circulating within the community suggests the boys may have been lured into attempting the so-called “backway” route to Europe. Unverified accounts claim they were approached by an unidentified man who allegedly persuaded them to bring money with the promise of facilitating their journey abroad.
The boys are believed to be from the Kunkujang-Banjulinding area, near the Abuko Nature Reserve, locally known as Buruwa.
While the police have not officially confirmed these claims, the reports have heightened fears of possible human trafficking or exploitation, particularly given the vulnerability of minors in irregular migration networks.
Authorities are appealing to members of the public to provide any information that could assist in locating the children. Anyone with relevant details is urged to contact the nearest police station as investigations continue.
