Gambia, China Agree on New Diplomatic Academy, Expanded Training, and Accelerated Project Delivery

Gambiaj.com – (BEIJING, China) – The Government of The Gambia and the People’s Republic of China have reached a series of concrete agreements aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation, including plans to establish a Foreign Service Academy, expand scholarships and training programs, and fast-track the implementation of key development projects.

The agreements were finalised during an official working visit to China by a high-level Gambian delegation led by Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Alieu Loum, marking the 10th anniversary of renewed diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Foreign Service Academy Plan, Expanded Scholarships and Training Under FOCAC

A central outcome of the visit is a shared commitment to support the proposed establishment of a Foreign Service Academy of The Gambia. Discussions with Chinese counterparts, including engagements at the China Foreign Affairs University, focused on building institutional partnerships to develop the academy, which is expected to strengthen The Gambia’s diplomatic capacity and professional training infrastructure.

Both sides agreed to scale up scholarships, technical training, and people-to-people exchanges within the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) 2026.

The move is designed to enhance human capital development and facilitate knowledge transfer in priority sectors aligned with The Gambia’s Recovery-Focused National Development Plan (2023–2027).

Push for Faster, Results-Oriented Project Implementation

In talks with the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), the two countries agreed to improve the speed and coordination of ongoing and future development projects, particularly in the energy sector.

Emphasis was placed on ensuring timely delivery, measurable outcomes, and stronger oversight mechanisms.

China also reaffirmed its continued grant assistance and concessional financing, including support through its “small and smart projects” initiative. The Gambian delegation presented new project proposals in priority areas, signaling an expansion of the development cooperation pipeline.

Strengthening Cooperation Frameworks on Energy, Trade, and Digital Innovation

Discussions with senior Chinese officials, including Vice Foreign Minister Miao Deyu, resulted in renewed commitments to advance cooperation under major frameworks such as FOCAC, the Belt and Road Initiative, and the Global Development Initiative.

Both sides agreed to prioritize institutional capacity building, infrastructure development, and collaboration in emerging sectors such as digital innovation.

The visit also identified energy, trade, digital transformation, and human capital development as key sectors for expanded collaboration. Both governments signaled intent to translate these priorities into actionable programs and investment-backed initiatives.

Diplomatic Alignment Reaffirmed

The Gambia reaffirmed its adherence to the One China Principle and pledged continued support for China in multilateral platforms, while both countries committed to translating their agreements into tangible outcomes that drive sustainable development.

The visit is being viewed as a milestone in consolidating a decade of renewed diplomatic ties, with both sides now shifting focus toward implementation of agreed initiatives and measurable development impact.
