UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Resigns Amid Mounting Pressure From Labour Party

Gambiaj.com – (LONDON, United Kingdom) – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday following months of growing pressure within the governing Labour Party, ending a turbulent tenure marked by electoral setbacks and internal divisions.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street in London, the Labour leader said he would step down as head of the party but remain in office until a successor is chosen.

All the decisions I have taken have been aimed at putting first the country that I love. That is why I will resign from my position as leader of the Labour Party,” Starmer said during an emotional address.

Starmer, who became prime minister in July 2024 after leading Labour to a landslide general election victory, had faced increasing calls to quit following a series of disappointing election results. Pressure intensified after Labour’s poor performance in local elections on May 7 and the victory of his internal rival, Andy Burnham, in a parliamentary by-election in northwest England last week.

According to reports, more than 100 Labour MPs—around a quarter of the party’s parliamentary contingent—had called for Starmer’s departure. Senior government figures were also reported to have urged him to establish a timetable for stepping down.

Critics blamed Starmer for several controversial decisions, including the appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to Washington. His opponents also pointed to Labour’s recent electoral losses as evidence that the government was losing public support.

Despite announcing his departure, Starmer highlighted what he described as key achievements during his leadership. He said he had helped rebuild Labour’s reputation after allegations of antisemitism within the party and had guided it to a historic parliamentary majority in 2024.

Starmer revealed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision and said Labour’s National Executive Committee would begin the process of selecting a new leader. Candidate nominations are expected to open on July 9 and close before Parliament’s summer recess ends on September 1.

Political observers believe Burnham, one of Britain’s most popular politicians, could emerge as the clear frontrunner to replace Starmer. The Greater Manchester mayor previously contested Labour leadership races in 2010 and 2015 but was unsuccessful on both occasions.

The resignation places Britain on course to have its seventh prime minister in a decade, underlining a period of political instability unprecedented in the country’s modern history.

International reaction was swift. Ursula von der Leyen praised Starmer as “a statesman” who had contributed to European and Ukrainian security.

Meanwhile, Nigel Farage called for a general election to be held as soon as possible. However, Labour continues to hold a commanding majority in Parliament, and the next scheduled general election is not due until 2029.

On Sunday, President Donald Trump appeared to anticipate Starmer’s departure, writing on his Truth Social platform that the British leader would resign and wishing him well.

Starmer’s exit marks a dramatic turning point for the Labour government less than two years after its return to power and opens a new chapter in British politics as the party prepares to choose its next leader.
